Growing Guide - Rocket

Rocket, also known as Arugula, has been cultivated since Roman times and is native to the Mediterranean and Eastern Asia. It has since become a popular addition to many modern dishes.  The leaves provide a bold peppery flavour to salads, pizza, pasta and sauces.

Plant

  • Rocket is a very easy, versatile plant to grow and is great for small spaces.
  • Rocket grows best in cooler climates in a sunny position. If you live in warmer climates plant in Winter or early Spring. Provide partial shade in the Summer months.
  • If planting in containers use a good quality soil with organic compost and water regularly to prevent the leaves from being bitter.
  • Plant 15-25cmcm apart to allow space for plant to spread when leaves are mature.
  • Plant alongside carrots and radish.

    Grow

    • Water young plants 2-3 times a week.
    • Use a liquid fertilizer fortnightly, we recommend Seasol.
    • Once you start harvesting water regularly to keep the plant from drying out and becoming bitter.

    Harvest

    • Pick leaves in as little as 4 weeks. Picking leaves frequently will make space for new growth and prevent it going to seed.
    • Its flavour will intensify with age.
    • You can also harvest the whole plant if you need a large harvest. Cut 2.5cm above ground and leave the rest of the plant to regrow!
